For more the 115 years it has been the goal of the Delaware County Historical Society to preserve and collect Delaware County history. Our 1907 bank building is now the permanent home of our societies collection and houses a museum which has about four exhibits per year. The research library which contains an extensive collection of birth, marriage, burial, census, church, court, genealogical, and land records. The library also contains maps, newspapers, telephone books, city directories, yearbooks and much more. The Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Education Center is used for lectures, and an interactive program for children. Our facility is also part of Chester City Historic Tour.
We are located in the business district of Chester, directly across from City Hall.
Visiting the Research Library and Archives
Research Library Hours:
Wednesday and Friday, 9am to 4pm
Thursday, 1pm to 6:30pm
Saturday, 9am to 2pm
Free parking is on the DCHS lot behind the building off 4th Street or in the municipal lot across 4th Street
From North: traveling south on Rt. 320 – turn left onto Edgemont Ave, which turns into Avenue of the States – follow to end at 4th Street – turn right, park in DCHS lot or MPL.
From Philadelphia: Traveling on 291- past the new Chester Municipal Bldg., turn right onto Edgemont Ave. – turn right onto 4th Street, park in DCHS lot on the left.
From Springfield Area: Rt. 420 – Right on 291 – same as above
Upon arrival you will be asked to “Sign In”. Researchers will be required to provide – name, address, phone number, e-mail and name of research project. Also, visitors must read and agree to obey the rules of the library. Volunteers will be available to help you.
